Just a few short weeks ago, Matthew\nSteinburg walked across the stage for his high school graduation at St.\nAndrew\u2019s College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, he found himself walking\nacross another stage in Vancouver; this time to put on the sweater of the NHL\u2019s\nColorado Avalanche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think they made the right decision,\u201d\nsaid Steinburg after the draft. \u201cI\u2019m just going to try to do my thing, and be a\nguy that they\u2019re happy they picked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a commitment to play for Cornell\nUniversity next year of the NCAA, Steinburg has proudly worn the \u2018C\u2019 for the\nSt. Andrew\u2019s College Saints over the past season, posting 75 points in just 56\ngames. He was also a key component in the Saints CISAA championship run,\nposting eight points in the playoffs en route to a title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steinburg said there were \u201ca lot of\nreasons\u201d why he took the Canadian prep school route to the NHL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom the moment I stepped on campus, it\nseemed like it was the right spot for me,\u201d said Steinburg, who sported his Old\nBoys tie on the day of the draft. \u201cI want to represent them, and show some\nrespect to the school. They have done a lot for me, and I think it was a big\nstep for my development, and one of the reasons I\u2019m where I am now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chosen with the first pick in the third\nround of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Steinburg was the second SAC hockey alumni\nto take on the Avalanche logo over the weekend, after high-end prospect Alex\nNewhook was drafted with the sixteenth pick in the first round on Friday. A\nNewfoundland native, Newhook spent time in both the SAC and York-Simcoe Express\nprograms before making his way to the Victoria Grizzlies of the British\nColumbia Hockey League.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Steinburg and Newhook share another\nsimilarity outside of playing at SAC and now the Avalanche together: both are\neast coasters, with Newhook from St. John\u2019s, and Steinburg from Halifax, making\nit even more of a thrill to be drafted by the Avalanche in joining Halifax\nnative Nathan MacKinnon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJoining Nathan MacKinnon and Alex\nNewhook, they\u2019re all guys that I\u2019m pretty familiar with,\u201d said Steinburg.\n\u201cThey\u2019re such high-end players. To be able to just tag along with them, and be\nsort of part of that journey, is really exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newhook, who was surrounded by media on\nFriday night following his first round selection, said he was \u201con cloud nine\u201d\nupon being such a high draft pick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
