Whether you\u2019re a\nlifetime gardener or a new Aurora homeowner looking for some tips on how to\nmake your garden grow, there will be something for everyone as Garden Aurora\nhosts its annual Aurora Garden Tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garden Aurora \u2013\nformally the Aurora Garden and Horticultural Society, which is now in the first\nyear of its second century \u2013 will showcase ten gardens in and around Town this\nSunday, June 23, each selected to show off a dazzling array of colours and\ncreativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Running from 12 noon\nto 4.30 p.m., the self-guided tour will not only feature local gardens but, new\nthis year, the \u201cGame of Roses & Art in the Gardens\u201d which will showcase\nlocally produced outdoor art in each of the selected showplaces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe always look for\ngardens that are done by local gardeners, gardens for Aurorans by Aurorans,\u201d\nsays event co-chair Judy Ryan. \u201c\u201cWe don\u2019t choose gardens that are created and\nmaintained by professional landscape companies because those \u201cgardens aren\u2019t\nattainable for most of our visitors. We want to inspire our visitors to create\ntheir own beautiful landscapes and, in order to do that, inspire them when they\nwalk into one of these gardens and say, \u2018I can do this.\u2019 It is not like walking\ninto the gardens that are on some of the large estates in Toronto where there\nare thousands and thousands of dollars spent. There are gardens that you can\ndo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, if you\u2019ve\nheard about the Aurora Garden Tour and thought, \u201cbeen there, done that.\u201d You\nhaven\u2019t really been there already, and you certainly haven\u2019t done that yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are so many\nfine gardens in Aurora that we have that we don\u2019t repeat a garden for 10\nyears,\u201d Ms. Ryan continues. \u201cWe revisit some gardens that have been on the tour\nbecause after 10 years the garden has changed and it will not be the same, but\nthis year none of these gardens have been on the tour previously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As these are all\ngardens by Aurorans, the tour will underscore the wide variety of plant\nmaterials that can grow and thrive in this community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garden Aurora member\nDonna Lewis says that there are still unique microclimates in Aurora and these\npockets support unique plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have lots of new\nsubdivisions coming in, so \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

there are a lot of\nnew gardens and people not [necessarily knowing] what can grow here,\u201d says\nDonna. \u201cIf you go on the tour of Aurora gardens, you will know what grows and\nyou will see how they survive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New this year, is a\nfresh commercial venture with Newmarket\u2019s New Roots Garden Centre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garden Aurora first\nformed this partnership last summer when the Aurora Garden & Horticultural\nSociety marked its 100th<\/sup> anniversary with a\nspecial AGM at Salvation Army\u2019s Northridge Community Church. The Garden Centre\nprovided entrance landscaping, but have since faced business challenges as\nYonge Street is reconstructed to make way for the Viva Rapidway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe reached out to\nthem this year because of the construction on Yonge Street in a way to say\nthank you to do something to benefit our club, visitors, and maybe provide New\nRoots some exposure given the construction,\u201d says Ms. Ryan. \u201cWe have partnered\nwith them and they have stepped up mightily in terms of discounts and a prize\nbasket for our Game of Roses, which is wire art that comes from Kingcrafts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickets for Sunday\u2019s\nGarden Tour are available now for $15 from New Roots Garden Centre, Aurora Home\nHardware, Blackforest Garden Centre, Caruso & Co, and this Saturday only at\nthe Aurora Farmers\u2019 Market from 8 \u2013 1 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
