The local chapter of the\nCanadian Mental Health Association will mark its first century in our community\nby lacing up and pumping up the bike tires for Mental Health in Motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Ride, Run, or Walk for\nMental Health, the Mental Health in Motion event will take place this Sunday,\nJune 23, at Newmarket\u2019s Upper Canada Mall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organizers have set a\nfundraising goal of $275,000 which will stay in this community, directly\nbenefiting mental health programs across York Region and South Simcoe,\nincluding MOBYSS, the Mobile York South Simcoe mobile health clinic for youth\nbetween the ages of 12 and 25. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formerly the \u201cRide Don\u2019t Hide\u201d\nfundraiser, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) has rebranded and\nrejigged the event for maximum inclusivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is our seventh annual\nevent,\u201d says Nigel Evans of the CMHA. \u201cWe have been growing this event\nexponentially year over year and last year [the organization] decided they\nwanted\u2026a message that was all-encompassing for mental health. This is more than\njust a ride and we changed it around to encompass a run\/walk for 5K to get more\nfamily involvement. Not everyone has a bike, but everyone is willing to walk or\nrun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the Ride, Don\u2019t Hide\nname was chosen to underscore the ongoing fight to battle stigma around mental\nhealth issues, organizers say this is still the focus and the rebrand helps\nthem engage and deliver their message on a whole new level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not being coy about\nit,\u201d says Catherine Matzig of the CHMA. \u201cIt\u2019s right there in your face in the\ntitle of the event, and it is as open as possible. This is a great day for all\nages and all athletic abilities. You don\u2019t have to be an athlete or have any\nkind of specialized equipment in order to participate and be a part of the\nday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day itself has a mission\nto promote mental health awareness and raise funds for local services designed\nto improve mental health and addictions care in South Simcoe and York Region.\nThey aim to engage and encourage public awareness around participants\u2019 own mental\nhealth by being physically active and enjoy quality time with friends and\nfamily in a community setting, along with increasing the profile of the CMHA in\nboth communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Registration will begin at\nUpper Canada Mall at 6.30 a.m., along with breakfast and fresh coffee being\nmade available for the early birds. Warm-ups for the 100 km ride will begin at\n7.15 a.m. for a 7.30 a.m. departure. Participants in the 60 km ride will begin\nwarming up at 8.15 a.m. for 8.30, with the 20 km ride participants warming up\n10 minutes before their 10.10 a.m. start and the 5 km riders holding back until\ntheir 10.25 takeoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 5 km run\/walk will get\nunderway at 10.35 a.m. after a 10.30 a.m. warmup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Live entertainment will run\nfrom 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature Juno-nominated singer Tyler Shaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a great thing to do\nwith your family or a group,\u201d says Ms. Matzig. \u201cIt is an opportunity to meet\nlots of new people who live in this community and are interested in activities\nthat grow and boost community involvement. We will have lots of health\ninformation and community information there as well. It is just a great way to\nspend a Sunday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
