Selections from the Beatles and Dolly\nParton songbooks rang out through the halls of Aurora\u2019s Sunrise Senior Living\non Wednesday as young kids connected with residents through the power of music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About a dozen Sunrise residents gathered\naround as Katie McClure of Marquee Theatrical Productions\u2019 Broadway Babies\nprogram and her kids held an impromptu jamboree, the first of a series of\nprograms at seniors\u2019 residents throughout Aurora and Newmarket intended to\nfoster inter-generational connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The curtain lifted on Marquee\u2019s \u201cRock of\nAge\u201d program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMusic is huge in the development of the\nchildren in our programs, but we have learned about intergenerational programs\nthat connect young ones with the aged people as well and it really opens up\ntheir minds,\u201d says Marquee\u2019s Sheryl Thomas. \u201cMusic just brings people together\nand it reaches even those who can no longer speak. My mom had Alzheimer\u2019s and\nas soon as there was music on, she became alive again. It\u2019s amazing how music\ncan really reach people \u2013 and seniors just love little children. They\u2019re\nhilarious to watch, so there is a nice interaction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. McClure set up her song circle with\nukuleles and guitars of her own, along with tambourines and pairs of maracas\nthat were shared amongst the kids and the seniors. Songbooks filled with\nselections from the Beatles, including Hey Jude, Dolly Parton\u2019s Jolene, and\nJohnny Cash\u2019s Ring of Fire were particular favourites with the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some seniors, however, wanted to go\noff-book, pitching song suggestions of their own, and if a particular song they\nliked wasn\u2019t in the book, they took it upon themselves to lead a capella\nrenditions of How Much is That Doggy in the Window? and Mairzy Dotes \u2013 showing\nthe youngsters how it\u2019s done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to be adding some pages to\nour songbook!\u201d said Ms. Thomas following the song circle. \u201cI\u2019m also going to\nask my dad to come in because my mom was in a home like this and they used to\nbring in music programs. My dad knows all these songs and plays the guitar, so\nmaybe he can join us. I think he would get a kick out of giving back to the\ncommunity that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
