The father-son hockey duo of Dave and Ryan\nGardner are among the individuals honoured as the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame\u2019s\nClass of 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gardners, recognized in the Athlete\ncategory, are joined by long-time golf volunteer Jim Clark, recognized in the\nBuilder\/Contributor category, swim coach Reg Chappell, honoured in the Coach\ncategory, and gymnast Travis Romagnoli, recognized in the Athlete category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am really honoured to be part of the\n2019 Aurora Sports Hall of Fame inductees, along with my son Ryan and other\ninductees,\u201d said David Gardner, who played over 350 games in the NHL, including\nstints with the Montreal Canadiens and the St. Louis Blues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added Ryan, who has represented Team\nCanada at the Winter Olympics, \u201cWhat a great feeling to receive a call from the\nAurora Sports Hall of Fame that you are not only being inducted, but with your\nfather. I was totally speechless. I can\u2019t wait for the evening and meeting the\nother inductees. I\u2019m thrilled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Class of 2019 was announced Tuesday\nnight in Council chambers and they will be celebrated at a special induction\ndinner this November at St. Andrew\u2019s College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Aurora Sports Hall of Fame celebrates\nexcellence in sports and pays tribute to those who have contributed and\nenriched the sport within Aurora, as well as those who have served as\nambassadors for local sport further afield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe 2019 slate of inductees continues to\nexemplify the depth of talent that sport has played in our community,\u201d said\nDavid Thom, President of the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame. \u201cThe commitment and\ndedication of these individuals to their sport and their generosity to give\nback to our community exemplifies Aurora\u2019s rich history of sport. We are proud\nto include them on our 2019 inductee slate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These sentiments were bolstered by Stephen\nForsey, Chair of the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame induction committee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot only are they highly distinguished in\ntheir respective careers, but more importantly they are outstanding people and\nlongstanding citizens of Aurora,\u201d he said. \u201cThey have brought a tremendous\nspotlight to our community as athletes, coaches and builders and have helped\nothers in their areas through volunteerism. They are role models and the Aurora\nSports Hall of Fame is fortunate and proud that they are Aurorans. It will be\nan honour to recognize and celebrate their achievements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A \u201cchampion of volunteers,\u201d Jim Clark has\nleant a helping hand for the Canadian Open for the past 35 years, and has\nserved eleven times as tournament chair. He has been previously recognized with\nthe PGA Volunteer of the Year Award and 2017 and will be back in action this\nAugust when Aurora hosts the 2019 Canadian Women\u2019s Open at the Magna Golf Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am so honoured to be considered by the\nAurora Sports Hall of Fame to be part of the 2019 slate of inductees and can\u2019t\nwait for this coming in November to meet my fellow inductees and enjoy a\nfabulous evening with my family and friends,\u201d said Mr. Clark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Mr. Clark has made his sporting\ncontributions on the greens, Reg Chappell\nhas made his name around the water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founder of Ducks\nSwimming in 1993, he has coached swimmers to new heights, including Paralympian\nSummer Mortimer to three new world records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2019 will be a banner\nyear for Mr. Chappell. Before his formal induction into the Aurora Sports Hall\nof Fame this fall, he will be inducted into the Ontario Aquatic Hall of Fame\nthis September. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am truly humbled,\u201d\nsaid Mr. Chappell. \u201cIt is a great honour and a great privilege to be recognized\nand I want to thank the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travis Romagnoli is\nfamiliar with hitting new heights, gaining fame as a gymnast from the age of 13\nwhen he won his first Canadian National Championship in 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 1994, he was named to the Canadian\nCommonwealth Gymnastics Team and, following high school and pursuing\npost-secondary education in the United States, was named All American and Big\nTen Conference Athlete of the Year.<\/p>\n\r\n\"Facebook\"<\/a>\"twitter\"<\/a>\"mail\"<\/a>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
