{"id":23885,"date":"2019-05-31T13:02:45","date_gmt":"2019-05-31T17:02:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/?p=23885"},"modified":"2019-05-31T13:02:54","modified_gmt":"2019-05-31T17:02:54","slug":"step-it-up-may-31-june-16-aurora-seeks-the-title-of-canadas-most-active-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/step-it-up-may-31-june-16-aurora-seeks-the-title-of-canadas-most-active-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Step it up May 31-June 16: Aurora seeks the title of \u201cCanada\u2019s Most Active Community\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ParticipACTION\u2019s\nCommunity Better Challenge may be a national event, but Sport Aurora and\nActivate Aurora have stepped it up locally up to prove that an engaged and\nco-ordinated community effort will be what it takes to earn this prestigious\ntitle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want everybody in\nAurora to be aware of this challenge and join in,\u201d said Activate Aurora Chair\nRon Weese during a gathering of sport, recreation and physical activity\nparticipants at the Aurora Family Leisure Complex. \u201cOur job here is to get\npeople excited, and show how easy it is to download and use the free\nParticipACTION app during the \u2018count weeks\u2019 from May 31 to June 16.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Activate Aurora has\njoined hundreds of communities across Canada, who are all vying for the same\nhonour. The Challenge uses a point system for each community (defined by postal\ncode and adjusted by population size) that includes the number of people who\ndownload the app, total minutes of activity entered on the app, and the\nadditional activity logged by Activate Aurora partners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten Aurora schools\nfrom both school boards, along with several private schools will be recording\ntheir students\u2019 activities. Sport organizations have also joined in. Likewise,\nfitness centres such as Club Aurora, Goodlife, Aurora Athletic Club and LA\nFitness will be adding activity minutes from their memberships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a big task to\ninclude everyone,\u201d said student volunteer Christian Carnovale, who is in charge\nof events and participant recruitment. \u201cBut we are getting there.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe believe that\nregardless of whether or not we win, the Challenge is a great community-builder\naround an important and valuable message \u2013 increasing healthy physical\nactivity,\u201d added Weese. \u201cBut wouldn\u2019t it be great to be able to say you live in\na community that has been recognized, nationally, as \u2018Canada\u2019s Most Active\u2019 by\na renowned agency like ParticipACTION?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is still time join the Community Better\nChallenge.
