It all began with a deep breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Meghan Kereakou asked everyone to breathe in, and then\nout, she asked them to pause, and consider how so many of us with two healthy\nlungs take that simple action for granted each and every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another deep breath, another thought. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if you lost a lung and had only one to rely on?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can still live, but your life will be reduced,\u201d she\nsaid. \u201cOur world is losing one of its lungs: the Amazon Rainforest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pickering College student outlined her ideas to help\nsave the rainforest Thursday in the presence of Elizabeth Dowdeswell,\nLieutenant-Governor of Ontario, at My Key Idea, a symposium of great ideas led\nby local Grade 5students, which is a key component of Pickering College\u2019s\nGlobal Leadership Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the ceremony, the Queen\u2019s representative presented\nstudents with their \u201ckeys,\u201d a symbol of unlocking their future as global\nleaders as they prepare to enter the Middle School this fall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My Key Idea was the culmination of more than five months\u2019\nwork where students were tasked to consider a number of very important issues\nand brainstorm ideas on how to make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Areas of investigation included global awareness,\nenvironmental stewardship, social justice, and understanding the impact of new\ntechnologies on our changing world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each idea was considered on how they impacted seventeen\nsustainable development goals outlined by the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participating Aurora students Winston Cao-Feng, Lindsay\nFu and Dylan Powell each delved deep into the topics of the Dangers of Nuclear\nWaste, the Dangers of Space Debris and Ocean Pollution & Marine Species\nLoss respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen many of you visited me at Queen\u2019s Park a few months\nago, I was so impressed by your knowledge of the sustainable development goals\nand more,\u201d the Lieutenant-Governor told students, teachers, and parents. \u201cToday\nis really about an opportunity for me to follow up and for you to tell me more\nabout your Key Ideas. When I looked through the list of topics, I was impressed\nto see that you covered so many goals of the seventeen goals, and not only\ntopics that are about environmental stewardship but also topics that relate to\nsocial justice. Those are all things that are going to be so important as you\ngrow up and learn to navigate this world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs Lieutenant-Governor, I have the great privilege of\nbeing all over this province and learning something new every day. Sometimes I\nthink as adults we actually don\u2019t pay enough attention to young people.\nSometimes the really critical questions \u2013 like one I had over lunch today \u2013\ncome from young people and I think you bring a special perspective that, in\nmany ways, are much more connected and much more open to new ideas than some of\nus adults are. I am always listening carefully for those stories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspiring students to build on the work they have\ncompleted through the Global Leadership Program so far, the Lieutenant-Governor\nshared stories of youth fostering tangible change all over the world, from\nIndigenous teen Autumn Peltier who has become an influential \u201cwater warrior\u201d\nrepresenting a number of First Nations, to 16-year-old environmentalist Greta\nThunburg of Sweden who has become an internationally-renowned voice in the\nfight against climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is so important that we learn to put each other in\nother people\u2019s shoes and to think about how we are all really connected,\u201d said\nthe Lieutenant-Governor. \u201cThe questions you\u2019re asking about, \u2018Why do we have\nhomelessness in a country and a province as rich as this one is? Why are there\nso many hungry people in our communities? Why do we see so much garbage? The\nimportant thing I understand is, as an outsider, about this Global Leadership\nProgram is it helps all of you understand that every person can make a\ndifference. Sometimes in small ways, sometimes in large ways, but it is all\nworth doing. I hope you will continue to be curious because we need your\nenergy.
