I\u2019m looking forward to being\nthere for the second time myself, for a number of reasons. As our largest\nannual fundraiser, this fantastic event brings out about 2,000 participants,\nspectators, and sponsors, all to support Southlake Regional Health Centre. It\u2019s\na really special opportunity to be able to see the sheer volume of support that\nwe are so fortunate to have within our communities, and to feel their energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last year I was particularly\ntouched by the people who had tears in their eyes as they crossed the finish\nline. It made me realize that this event is so much more than a 5K fitness\nevent. People come because they care<\/em>. They come because they want to make sure\nSouthlake is there for everyone when they need it. And they come because they\nfeel like they can make a difference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This year one of our returning\nparticipants is Aurora resident, Zach Ferry. In 2018, Zach formed a team in\nmemory of his late mother, who received care in Southlake\u2019s Intensive Care Unit\nlast year. As the top community fundraising team last year, he talked about how\ngood it felt to help others have the same positive experience he and his family\nhad. The team\u2019s fundraising page this year says it best: <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe want to give back\nto Southlake to ensure that any family that faces a similar situation will be\nable to do what my family got to do, which was to be there when she needed us\nmost and to say goodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n I am grateful for\nthese types of stories and, since joining the Southlake family a little over a\nyear and a half ago, these stories have helped me learn a lot about the\ncommunities that we are part of. Southlake serves a population of more than 1.5\nmillion people. Amazingly, in many ways we still feel like a community hospital\nat our core \u2013 and that is something that is truly unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s also incredibly\ninspiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The government does not provide\nfunding for most new and replacement tools and equipment, so we rely entirely\non the generosity of our communities to fund things the expert clinical teams\nat Southlake rely on to provide the leading-edge care you expect and deserve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n From the growth of Southlake over\nthe years, it\u2019s clear to me that our communities see the value in having the\nbest possible health care in their own backyard.
