They laced up their\nrunning shoes, did their stretches and, in some cases, unfolded their walkers\nor whipped out their Nordic walking poles, and hit the track last Saturday with\nthe same mission \u2013 to raise much needed funds for senior services in York\nRegion and South Simcoe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chartwell Walking\nTrack at the Aurora Family Leisure Complex was the scene on April 13 when CHATS\n(Community & Home Assistance to Seniors) hosted its annual Walk for\nWellness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dozens of participants\nand vendors banded together for the event which, at press time, was well past a\nfundraising target of $17,000 with sponsor dollars pouring in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Topping the list of\nteams was the CHATS Board Walkers, which raised a whopping $5,650 for the\ncause, while the team from the Aurora Seniors\u2019 Association glided into second\nplace with $1,697.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI always say I come\nfrom the best community \u2013 well, most people say that, but I am actually right\nwhen I say it \u2013 and part of the reason is so many great organizations like\nCHATS,\u201d said Newmarket-Aurora MP Kyle Peterson at the conclusion of the Walk.\n\u201cAs Member of Parliament, you get to take a look at the whole community and all\nthe organizations out there. We really do have a great community and it is\nbecause of volunteers and community events and organizations like this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou are really, truly\nmaking a difference in people\u2019s lives. It seems simple to spend a morning\nwalking around a few laps, but those little efforts and events like this make\nour community so much better and it makes the lives of people who live in our\ncommunity so much richer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CHATS has a long\nhistory of service within the York Region and South Simcoe Community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its programs include\nin-home and home safety services to seniors, transportation services and\ncommunity programs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to say a very\nbig thank you on behalf of CHATS, the Board, staff and the 480-plus volunteers\nwho contribute to providing support to York Region\u2019s older adults on behalf of\nCHATS to support their care close to every day of the year,\u201d said CHATS Board\nChair Ian Hilley. \u201cThis is a very important event for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
