Residents of area\nretirement communities under the Chartwell banner have made the walking track\nat the Aurora Family Leisure Complex a destination for keeping healthy and\nactive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been a\nlong-running relationship, but one which was taken to the next level on Friday\nmorning as Chartwell and the Town celebrated the re-dedication of the Chartwell\nWalking Track. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is another great\nexample of how the Town of Aurora partners with outside organizations and\nespecially with an aging population it is a great way for us to educate,\npromote and provide more opportunities for our seniors within our community,\u201d\nsaid Mayor Tom Mrakas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a great\nopportunity for us because\u2026this is a great opportunity to highlight the health\nand wellness of our seniors,\u201d adds Patti Smith, Retirement Living Consultant\nwith Chartwell Park Place. \u201cIn the wintertime, we come here almost every\nThursday. We come here once a week from Park Place on buses. Our residents\nenjoy the fact that they can get out, especially in the wintertime, because\nsometimes they are stuck inside a little bit more. They like to come out and do\ntheir walk, then we always go out for tea afterwards at the Maple Tea House.\nThat is a big thing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey feel part of the\ncommunity, it gives them the chance to chat with other people, it gives them an\nidea of what else is going on in the community, and it is very important to\nhave an opportunity to talk to your peers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that they have\nsecured the naming rights to the track, Chartwell will soon begin to take an\neven more active role in the facility. On the docket are a series of community\nseminars they will facilitate touching on topics such as\ndealing with aging parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June, they will\nhost a fundraiser for a wish foundation similar to the Children\u2019s Wish\nFoundation, but focusing on the wishes of our senior population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe partner with Make a Wish and we make wishes\nthroughout the community. Anybody can sponsor a senior for Make a Wish,\u201d says\nMs. Smith, noting that wishes granted through the foundation so far include a\ntrip overseas, reuniting a father and son, getting another resident who dreamed\nof flying in a Second World War fighter jet up into the air, and making one\nsenior\u2019s wish of attending a Celine Dion concert come true.<\/p>\n\r\n\"Facebook\"<\/a>\"twitter\"<\/a>\"mail\"<\/a>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
