There\u2019s nothing like a visit to the Aurora Home\nShow to demonstrate how inadequate your home really is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may walk into the Show proud of your\nbeloved domicile and thinking your house has stood the test of time, but by the\ntime you leave following discussions with various vendors, you may never look\nat it the same way again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vendors aren\u2019t trying to make you feel bad\n\u2013 well, maybe some of the more sadistic ones are \u2013 but times change.  This\nmeans a continuing evolution in building materials, technology, design\nstandards and decor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take televisions, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not too long ago, TVs were big, heavy,\nvacuum-tube filled cubes sitting on special stands, that could only be located in\na room where a TV cable happened to come out of the wall, and whose programs\ncould only be watched when the networks scheduled them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now TVs are so thin they\u2019re virtually two\ndimensional, although ironically can display in 3D, are light enough for even\nmonster-sized versions to be mounted on any wall, can, based on wifi access, be\nlocated anywhere in a home, and can provide virtually any content any time, or\nat the very least, automatically record it for your viewing at a time of your\nconvenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the example of televisions is a bit technology-related,\nthe pace of this sort of rapid change can be applied to everything you may find\nat the Home Show: kitchen counters, windows, flooring, appliances, furnaces,\ndriveways, decks, window coverings, insulation, paint, garage doors, plumbing, appliances,\ndoors, water softeners, furniture, air conditioners, security systems, patios,\nlighting, hot tubs, roofing\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, everything, even paint, can be made new\nand improved, given enough research time, and incentive by the manufacturers to\nmake a profit by rendering the previous version obsolete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, bottom line; no matter how recently-built\nyour residence is, there\u2019s a lot of stuff that\u2019s rapidly becoming outdated in it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This includes a number of things you\u2019ll\ndiscover at the Home Show that you apparently desperately need to think of, but\nhave never even heard of, like parging, ferrules and cap flashing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vast variety of things to see makes it easy\nto get wrapped up in all of the possibilities.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact that many vendors will be offering\ndeals of various sorts certainly encourages you to check out their offerings. \nAfter all, who doesn\u2019t want a discount on the installation of a new eaves trough,\nor get a free upgrade on a kitchen renovation, even if the only reason you\ndropped by the Show was to get a hotdog from the Optimists\u2019 Club BBQ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may even find yourself seriously\ncontemplating that deal for 10 per cent off a yard of topsoil, even though you\nlive in a condominium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the very least one can never get enough free\npens, scratch pads and fridge magnets, which it seems everyone gives away each\nyear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few hours at the Stronach Aurora Recreation\nComplex each spring is certainly an enlightening experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But beware; depending on how much guilt you\ncome away with about the condition of your current home, the $5 cover charge\nmay be easy on the pocketbook, but the subsequent upgrades to your house may\nnot be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
