Book lovers know that neither rain nor sleet can keep you from a\nbook sale \u2013 but ice storms? The Aurora United Church Women were not so sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They needn\u2019t have worried; customers turned out in droves last\nApril to stock up on their spring and summer reading while helping several\nlocal community groups in the process. This year, as they gear up for another\nbook sale next Saturday, they\u2019re hoping Mother Nature will be back on their\nside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Aurora United Church Women are once again gearing up for their fourth annual Spring Book Sale, which will take place in the atrium of Trinity Anglican Church this Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With stock based entirely on community donations, which will be\naccepted at Trinity on April 5 from 4 \u2013 7 p.m., and April 6 from 8 \u2013 10 a.m.,\nthe sale will offer a wide selection of second-hand paperbacks and children\u2019s\nbooks at low prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were amazed last year because our Book Sale was on the same\nday as the tremendous ice storm back in April and we figured it was Game Over,\u201d\nsays volunteer Kathie Blackman. \u201cBut we were surprised by the number of people\nwho came in and ended up making just about the same amount that we did last\nyear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fellow volunteer Anne Ella-Arnold says their objective is twofold\n\u2013 one is fellowship and the other is outreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe would like to bring in enough to support at least four of the\ncharities that we normally support every fall, and more would be terrific,\u201d Ms.\nElla-Arnold explains. \u201cThe reason for our sale is to raise funds, but it is\nalso for outreach to allow inexpensive books to be purchased by the community.\nWe purposely have it on the same day as our Rise & Shine Breakfast (a meal\ngeared towards community members in need) so that breakfast patrons can come\nhere and shop at the same time. Of course, we also do it to keep ourselves\nvisible in the community and we do it for fellowship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charitable organizations regularly supported by the Aurora United\nChurch Women include the Aurora Food Pantry, Aurora Historical Society, Blue\nDoor Shelters, the Camping Opportunities Fund, Gran Aurora, Hope House\nCommunity Hospice, Inn from the Cold, L\u2019Arche Daybreak, Milkbags Unlimited,\nRose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers, Sandgate Women\u2019s shelter, United\nChurch of Canada Mission & Service Fund, The Women\u2019s Centre of York Region,\nWomen\u2019s Inter-church Council \u2013 Fellowship of the Least Coin, Yellow Brick\nHouse, and York Region Street Outreach Crosslinks Housing & Support\nServices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each donation received on the afternoon and evening of April 5\nand on the morning of April 6 will help make a difference for many of these\ngroups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donations paperbacks of all genres, including children\u2019s books,\nare welcome \u2013 particularly non-fiction. Hardcovers are respectfully declined\ndue to storage and handling challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volunteers, including high school students, are also welcome to\nget involved and time contributed can be counted towards high school Community\nService hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
