The St. Max Mustangs have landed among\nthe best in the province in girls varsity hockey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The York Region champion Mustangs earned\na bronze medal finish at last weekend\u2019s OFSAA championship tournament, held in\nMidland to pit Ontario\u2019s regional champions against one another on the ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Aurora squad, based at St.\nMaximilian Kolbe Catholic High School, were up to the task offensively from the\nget-go, posting a 6 \u2013 4 win over St. Peter\u2019s of Barrie in the opening game of\nthe round robin, also besting Ancaster\u2019s Bishop Tonnos School 6 \u2013 2 to advance\nto the quarterfinal matchup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There they met St. Peter\u2019s of\nPeterborough, the winners of the Group D division, advancing to the semifinal\nround by way of a 4 \u2013 1 final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

London\u2019s Medway High School was the next\nopponent, the winners of the last two OFSAA championships. St. Max finally met\ntheir match in a 3 \u2013 1 loss, sending the Mustangs to the bronze medal game\nversus Mississauga\u2019s Mount Carmel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Determined to respond from their finals\nelimination, Lara Jorgensen, Meghan Anderton, Jacey Dane, and Julia Cuccia each\nfound the back of the net to secure the bronze for the Mustangs in a 4 \u2013 1\nvictory. Erynn Visser was between the pipes for the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery girl on the team stepped up and\nplayed their hearts out and exce0eded all expectations to achieve the success\nthey did at this championship,\u201d said head coach Kate Treacy, who pointed out\nthe senior leadership of team captains Dane, Jayden Thompson, and assistant\ncaptain Melissa More, commending their \u201cexceptional hockey throughout the final\ntournament.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Thompson and Dane are moving out\neast to play at the collegiate level next season, with Thompson heading to Nova\nScotia to compete with the St. Francis Xavier X-Women, and Dane suiting up for\nthe St. Thomas University Tommies in New Brunswick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mustangs booked their ticket to the\nprovincial championship via their fourth-straight YRAA title over Stouffville\nHigh School in early March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
