The St. Andrew\u2019s College Saints have\nreturned to the national throne, winning the National Independent School\nInvitational Championship (NISIC) on home ice on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A perfect run to the championship game\nversus Stanstead College had the varsity Saints poised for their first national\ntitle since 2016, locked in a battle of the prestigious tournament\u2019s only\nremaining undefeated teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Saints seemed to have the reins to the\ngame in the second period, scoring three straight goals off a pair from Matthew\nSteinburg and a single from Devlin Obrien to take a 3 \u2013 0 lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saints goalkeeper Dante Fernandes held\nStanstead off the scoresheet until close to midway through the first period,\nthough Obrien\u2019s second of the game was the only thing holding back a Stanstead\ncomeback in the Saints squeaking out a 4 \u2013 3 victory to take the national\ntitle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to the third period shakeup,\nFernandes and the Saints dominated their competition defensively in allowing\nonly three goals in the previous four games of the tournament, including a 5 \u2013\n0 shellacking of the rival Upper Canada College in the semifinal matchup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fernandes needed to make just fifteen\nsaves in the contest, a rivalry over a century old. Christian MacDougall led\nthe way with a pair of goals, while adding an assist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a fitting end to what has been a\nnear-perfect season for the varsity Saints, completing their own version of the\nHoly Trifecta with championships in January\u2019s MacPherson tournament, the CISAA\ntitle, and now the NISIC title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
