A rollercoaster season met with a fizzle\nfor the Junior A Aurora Tigers on Thursday, who bowed out to the Newmarket\nHurricanes in Game Five of their first round Ontario Junior Hockey League\nseries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Down three games to one in the\nbest-of-seven and needing a win in Thursday\u2019s Game Five in Newmarket, the\nTigers were first on the board thanks to a sweet pass from Tyler Davis to\nlinemate Jack Varga, though Newmarket\u2019s Derek Sweeney beat Aurora goalie Lucas\nDurante before the first buzzer to tie it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A goalie battle ensued for most of the\nnext thirty minutes, before the only other marker of the game came off the\nstick of Newmarket\u2019s Jalen Balbosa early in the third, hanging on with his\nteammates the rest of the way for the 2 \u2013 1 win and series victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the Hurricanes, the series finale\nmarks the next step in a continuous rise to the top since the new year. For the\nTigers, it marks a fitting end to what has been a tailspin for the team since\nmid-December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A free fall of just four wins in their\nfinal twenty regular season games met the Tigers, who in the early stages of\nthe OJHL season seemed an obvious answer to clinch the North division. The loss\nof league-leading scorer Joseph Mizzi to the ECHL pro rankings in February did\nnothing to help the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Penalty trouble seemed to plague the\nTigers throughout the playoffs, as it did during the regular season as one of\nthe league\u2019s most penalized teams. The 4 \u2013 1 loss in game four last Wednesday,\nin what appeared to be the final nail in the coffin, featured thirty minutes in\nthe sin bin for the Aurora squad: one which included the 3 \u2013 1 powerplay goal\nlate in the second period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those still looking to follow along\nwith the OJHL postseason, it will be another all-York Region matchup in the\nconference semifinals, where the Hurricanes will be pitted against the Markham\nRoyals. The first-place Royals knocked out the Georgetown Raiders in their\nopening round series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Oakville Blades also bested the\nBrampton Admirals in five games to reach their semifinal, while the Buffalo Jr.\nSabres and Burlington Cougars are still looking to determine their winner all\ntied up at three games apiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other side of the board, the\nNorth York Rangers will face the winner of either the St. Michael\u2019s Majors or\nToronto Lakeshore Patriots, while the Wellington Dukes will take on the Whitby\nFury in their respective semifinal series.<\/p>\n\r\n\"Facebook\"<\/a>\"twitter\"<\/a>\"mail\"<\/a>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
