The hottest hands in the OJHL stayed lit on Sunday afternoon in the Aurora Tigers\u2019 3 \u2013 2 win over the Mississauga Chargers.
\nWith the Chargers serving out the remainder of an interference call in the opening seconds of the second period, Joseph Mizzi found the back of the net for the fifth time in the last four games, putting his team up 2 \u2013 1.
\nTeam owner Jim Thomson said Mizzi is \u201con a mission.\u201d
\n\u201cHe\u2019s been on another level. I believe he will go on to play pro hockey, he\u2019s got all the attributes to play hockey: he\u2019s got a pro shot, pro skating ability, and mentally he has figured it out. That\u2019s why he\u2019s doing what he\u2019s doing, he\u2019s understanding that it takes more than just shooting a puck to be successful.\u201d
\nGetting on the scoresheet in ten of his last eleven games, including seven multi-point efforts in that span, Mizzi has stretched his lead atop the OJHL\u2019s scoring pace to seven over the Toronto Jr. Canadiens\u2019 Eric Ciccolini: with a whopping 20 goals and 26 assists through just 25 games this season.
\nYet it isn\u2019t just his offensive talents that are impressing Aurora brass this year.
\n\u201cHe\u2019s figured it out,\u201d said Thomson. \u201cHe\u2019s become a great two-way hockey player, where he cares so much about the defensive end. And that\u2019s transpired into this magical season for him.\u201d
\n\u201cHe\u2019s deserved every inch of it. If you watch him play, he\u2019s finishing his checks, he\u2019s back-checking, and he\u2019s being a complete leader on the team.\u201d
\nMarkus Paterson and Michael Palandra also scored in the win, while Jack Irvine was solid between the pipes in stopping 30 of the 32 shots he faced.
\nOne of the highest scoring teams league-wide this season, the Tigers pat their lead atop the OJHL\u2019s North division with yet another pair of points, now leading the Markham Royals by a comfortable thirteen point margin.
\nTheir 18-7-0-2 record has the Tigers six points back of the Oakville Blades for both the NorthWest conference and league lead.
\nAurora and Mississauga will meet up for their second and final battle of the season back in Mississauga on Saturday.
\nAurora will first contend with the Brantford 99ers (9-11-0-5) in a home game Friday, who they bested in overtime earlier this month.
\nPuck drop Friday is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Aurora Community Centre.
