A pair of undisciplined plays were the undoing for the Aurora FC men in their 2 \u2013 0 loss to the Sanjaxx Lions on Sunday.
\nPenalty kicks at the 35th and 40th minute marks of the match at Monarch Stadium in Toronto each found twine behind goalkeeper Alexander Jakma, while Aurora failed to score on a penalty kick of their own.
\nAurora head coach Derek O\u2019Keeffe was frustrated with the result, calling it a \u201cpoor game of football all around.\u201d
\n\u201cI thought both teams were poor,\u201d he said. \u201cI thought we started quite well, probably should have scored an early goal but didn\u2019t. I don\u2019t fault the effort of our players, I thought they tried. I don\u2019t think Sanjaxx created anything other than the two penalties and we had one of our own but couldn\u2019t score.
\n\u201cIf you don\u2019t take your chances, you don\u2019t score or win – simple as that.\u201d
\nAurora, which has fallen to 1-11-1 in the East division standings this season, will have a chance to gain some ground when they visit ProStars FC at Avondale Stadium this Saturday: one of two teams in League 1 Ontario without a win this year.
\nThe women\u2019s side of Aurora FC found success in week 14 of the League 1 season, squeaking out a 4 \u2013 3 win over a lowly Darby FC squad.
\nThough Darby opened the scoring at the 20-minute mark, Aurora notched three goals in the course of five minutes late in the first half to take a 3 \u2013 1 lead into the break.
\nAfter making it 4 \u2013 1 early in the second half, Aurora held off a late comeback that saw Darby score twice in the final five minutes of the match.
\n\u201cIt was a back and forth game and Darby ended up putting in a great effort at the end to come back and make it very interesting,\u201d said Aurora head coach Gianni Cimini.
\n\u201cIt was a hot day and I think overall I\u2019m pleased with the performance of the girls.\u201d
\nThe win was a crucial one for the Aurora squad, moving them up the League 1 ladder past the Woodbridge Strikers with a 6-6-0 record.
\n\u201cWhen one team is looking to score and get back into the game and you feel that you have a comfortable lead, it is always an issue for the team with advantage in the scoreline,\u201d added Cimini.
\n\u201cI think as things went on we got more and more nervous and luckily the clock ended up ticking off because we could have conceded another goal.\u201d
