{"id":17601,"date":"2017-06-21T16:59:51","date_gmt":"2017-06-21T20:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/?p=17601"},"modified":"2017-06-21T16:59:51","modified_gmt":"2017-06-21T20:59:51","slug":"aurora-martial-arts-centre-earns-shaolin-moniker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/aurora-martial-arts-centre-earns-shaolin-moniker\/","title":{"rendered":"Aurora martial arts centre earns Shaolin moniker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Jake Courtepatte<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to the martial arts, the Shaolin Temple of China is synonymous with expertise, discipline, and a rich history.<br \/>\nNow, Canada\u2019s Black Belt Martial Arts in Aurora has the opportunity to share in that history, officially changing its name to Shaolin Martial Arts Canada after an acceptance as an official affiliate of the Shaolin Temple.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Shaolin Temple is the original source of all martial arts in existence today,\u201d said Black Belt Master Tim Wakefield. \u201cEvery martial art owes in some way or another to the great innovations of the Shaolin culture.\u201d<br \/>\nWith the official moniker of \u201cOverseas Shaolin Culture Institution\u201d, the centre is now able to teach the Shaolin style.<br \/>\nAccording to Master Wakefield, Shaolin is based off \u201cmoving meditations\u201d that can be translated into any form of martial arts.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s truly an honour to have \u2018Shaolin\u2019 in our new name.\u201d<br \/>\nCelebrating the change at a demonstration open house and barbecue last Saturday, the weekend also marked the 23rd anniversary since Master Wakefield opened the school in Aurora.<br \/>\n\u201cThe school has made a large impact on the community in all the year\u2019s it\u2019s been in town,\u201d said Aurora Mayor Geoff Dawe. \u201cThis rebranding only works to solidify its place in the community.\u201d<br \/>\nMaster Shi Juan Yiang, a real Shaolin monk from the Temple, also paid a visit to Aurora for the first time since 2015 to perform a ceremony to honour the Temple\u2019s newest inductee.<br \/>\nAlong with the acceptance, Master Wakefield himself was named as a direct disciple of the Head Abbot of the Temple, a 34th generation Warrior Monk, the first Canadian to do so under the current Abbot.<br \/>\nMaster Wakefield began his training over thirty years ago, studying the Shaolin Kemp Karate system under Master Henry Choo Chong in Richmond Hill. He has been teaching his practice in Aurora and the GTA since 1994, receiving his Eighth Degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate in 2013.<\/p>\n<a class=\"synved-social-button synved-social-button-share
