This is in regards to the General Committee Meeting, Tuesday, April 2, and discussions on the Catherine Avenue and Spruce Street diverter and no left hand turn at Centre and Spruce Streets.
\nUpon perusing the Agenda for the above meeting, I realized this matter was one of the subjects for discussion and I decided to attend the meeting. Here are some observations:
\nAs most of us undoubtedly remember, the road constraints at the above locations were put in place several years ago, when there was considerable work being done at Wellington and Yonge Streets and the traffic had to be diverted.
\nThe residents of Catherine Avenue were inconvenienced for a time by the increased vehicular traffic due to this construction, but at the end of the day, everyone else is being inconvenienced.
\nThe condo, Centro, is being built at the corner of Centre & Yonge Streets. How will these residents get to Wellington Street or the Industrial Parkway, or if they would like to get to the GO Station or Highway 404?
\nI presume, either by attempting to turn left or right onto Yonge Street, or traveling north on Spruce from Centre Street and making a right hand turn unto the \u201challowed\u201d Catherine Avenue. Will the Catherine Avenue residents complain again and what further restrictions will we all have to endure?
\nAlso, not being able to continue east on Centre Street from the intersection of Spruce Street, will add to the woes of the Centro condo owners. Hopefully, the developer is making the purchasers aware of these road restrictions. Want to bet?!
\nAt the Council meeting, I also learned that there is an application for an apartment to be erected on Wellington Street, right next to the old Post Office building, which, as we all know is also up for sale. Those buildings will undoubtedly have entrances\/exits unto Centre Street.
\nHow will that traffic flow? Onto Catherine Avenue?
\nIt is my hope that when Aurora Councillors discuss this matter again, they will let common sense prevail for the good of all. The diverter at Spruce Street and Catherine Avenue needs to be dismantled, so does the \u201cno left turn\u201d at Spruce and Centre Streets. Travelling on Yonge Street is a nightmare at the best of times and these restrictions make getting around much more difficult for ALL residents\/taxpayers of Aurora.
\nAnd, by the way, let\u2019s not forget the new Roman Catholic Church, which is being planned to replace the existing Our Lady of Grace Church. As it is, anyone living east of Spruce Street on Catherine Avenue, has to make quite the detour to reach the Church down the road. Does that make any sense?
\nAurora is a growing community. We are all subject to increased traffic on our roads. It would be chaotic if we all lamented the fact and barriers were set up to reduce traffic so as to maintain our \u201cexclusive\u201d neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n
