A strong showing on the field was all for naught Monday night for St. Andrew\u2019s College junior varsity Saints soccer, beaten by a late converted penalty kick.<\/p>\n

The Saints entered the match fresh off a heartbreaking loss to Appleby College the week prior, Appleby\u2019s first and only win so far this CISAA season. Their opponent, Country Day School, meanwhile, is locked in a battle for first place in the east division, playing to a scoreless tie last week with undefeated Villanova College.<\/p>\n

The game was in the hands of the Cyclones early on, opening the scoring on a rocket from outside the box that just tipped off the outstretched hands of the Saints goalkeeper. The lead didn\u2019t last long, as Adam Ali stormed through the CDS defenders with speed only a few minutes later before dropping a cheeky chip shot into the Cyclone net.<\/p>\n

Still tied at one in the second half, both sides saw a number of chances to regain the lead, but sending strikes straight into each goaltender\u2019s hands. It took a hard challenge inside the SAC 18-yard box for scoring to reopen, as goalkeeper Ayo Ogunremi guessed the wrong way on the penalty kick for an easy conversion.<\/p>\n

The Cyclones held onto the lead for the remaining minutes, earning the 2 \u2013 1 victory.<\/p>\n

With a 1-4-0 record, the Saints have been eliminated from postseason contention with one game left against Royal St. George\u2019s College on Wednesday.
\n\u201cWe\u2019re proud of what the boys have accomplished this season,\u201d said coach Stephen Kimmerer. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen what they\u2019re capable of and what they can improve on for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their varsity counterparts also wrap up their season on Wednesday, looking to improve their 2-3-2 record in a match with Appleby College.
