With over thirty member organizations now under the Sport Aurora banner, it\u2019s clear how important volunteering has been in establishing its presence over the past decade.<\/p>\n

That is why, for the fifth year, Sport Aurora has honoured the top volunteers within the sporting community in a special ceremony at East Side Mario\u2019s on Bayview Avenue.<\/p>\n

Almost one hundred friends, family, and colleagues packed the venue to recognize eighteen volunteers who have gone out of their way to ensure the growth of sports within Aurora.<\/p>\n

Mayor Geoff Dawe was on hand to congratulate the award recipients, as well as Councillors John Abel and Michael Thompson.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such a huge benefit to our Town to have a group of such enthusiastic volunteers,\u201d said Mayor Dawe. \u201cWe\u2019re proud of our sporting community in Aurora [and] I think we provide a model for others to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Volunteers from fourteen different organizations were recognized. Recipients were Storm Volleyball\u2019s Mike Jones and Teodora Durca, Aurora Senior Association\u2019s Richard Howard, York North Basketball\u2019s Sean Doran and Nathan Wilmets, Evolution Gymnastics\u2019 Warren Bisbee and Tyler Hotte, Aurora Lawn Bowling Club\u2019s Gary Joyce, Redbirds Lacrosse Club\u2019s Steve McNaught and Michael Rollings, Aurora Sports Hall of Fame\u2019s Bob McRoberts, Special Olympics Ontario\u2019s Nancy Shaw, Aurora Men\u2019s Slo-Pitch\u2019s Paul Watts, Central York Girls Hockey\u2019s Heather Clarke, Ducks Swimming Club\u2019s Nicole Pignatelli, York Oldtimers Hockey League\u2019s Norm Sanford, Aurora Diggers\u2019 Trudy Stunden, and Aurora King Baseball Association\u2019s Craig Deasley.<\/p>\n

Lindsay O\u2019Connor, host of International Sports Report on radio station FAN590, was the guest speaker for the event. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou can never overlook the role that sports can play in a community,\u201d said O\u2019Connor. \u201cAnd volunteers are at the heart of it. You all should be proud of what you do.\u201d<\/p>\n
