Mayor Geoff Dawe has struck the \u201cMayor\u2019s Task Force on Physical Activity\u201d to help further Aurora\u2019s goal to become the \u201cHealthiest Community in Canada\u201d in this, the Year of Sport. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy goal is simple \u2013 we will be Canada\u2019s most active community,\u201d says Mayor Dawe in a memo before Council this week.<\/p>\n

He describes the task force as a \u201ccross-sectoral commitment\u201d to do just that, implementing lifestyle changes that will have a \u201cpositive and lasting impact\u201d on our community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to The Auroran earlier this week, he said one activity the task force would like to get off the ground was \u201ca walk to Mars and back\u201d whereby people across the community would register to log how many steps they take in one day, tallying everyone\u2019s steps with the objective of covering the distance from Earth to the red planet and back.<\/p>\n

Improvements \u2013 and possible additions \u2013 to Aurora\u2019s existing infrastructure could also be part of what the task force looks at, he added, and various ideas have been kicked around on just what an additional facility might be. As demographics in Aurora change, so do the sports and activities that are particularly popular. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to be a wide cross-section with people from the sporting community, people from culture, and people from business communities, because we will be looking for sponsorship,\u201d says Mayor Dawe. \u201cWe are still in the throes of putting this all together.
