{"id":10533,"date":"2015-04-29T22:41:19","date_gmt":"2015-04-30T02:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/?p=10533"},"modified":"2015-05-13T18:01:24","modified_gmt":"2015-05-13T22:01:24","slug":"st-max-rides-past-18000-mark-to-fight-childhood-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/st-max-rides-past-18000-mark-to-fight-childhood-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Max rides past $18,000 mark to fight childhood cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Jake Courtepatte<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The gym at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School was filled with cowboys, Indians, baseball players, Disney characters and fairies last Wednesday \u2013 all for a good cause.<\/p>\n<p>Students and faculty dressed up in costume for The Inside Ride, a national touring fundraising campaign fighting childhood cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsored by the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation, St. Max was one of 125 Ontario stops on the agenda this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to live in a world where no one has to hear \u2018your child has cancer\u201d, said Jenn Davies, Program Manager of The Inside Ride.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its third year, the tour is Canada\u2019s first and only national indoor cycling challenge. Davies said the funds are divided into the areas where they see the greatest need, such as funding of oncology camps, family support programs, survivor scholarships and other areas that ease the burdens of a family experiencing childhood cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the students of St. Max raised approximately $18,000 for their ride. 100-percent of profits goes to the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Teams of six took turns riding stationary bicycles for ten minutes at a time, with prizes at the end going to the team that \u201crode\u201d the farthest.<br \/>\nBut it seemed that most participants were into the team spirit and cheering than they were the competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedals also go out to the best costume and most spirited team, which are often difficult to choose,\u201d said Davies. \u201cAs you can see it really brings people together, not so much for the competition but for the nature and excitement of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Organized by grade 12 students, the event was high-spirited and loud for its entirety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the music bumping, and all the dancing, and everything, it really makes fundraising fun,\u201d said Davies. \u201cThe kids are having fun, the teachers are having fun, and money is being raised, which is of course the end goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two teams topped $1,000 in donations \u2013 \u201cThe Incredibles\u201d, and \u201cThe Social Network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone did an incredible job of raising money for a good cause,\u201d said Melton Moyo, Vice Principal of St. Max. He said he was was especially proud of the excitement he saw in the students \u2013 and not just because they weren\u2019t in class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud of our entire student body today.
