Soup & Bread created hope at Empty BowlsEmpty Bowls events are held by potters in towns across North America in an effort to relieve homelessness and hunger. These events are a great example of vibrant communities such as ours in action. On behalf the committee, I would like to express our gratitude to everyone who participated in Pine Tree Potters Guild's 2013 Empty Bowls Event held on December 5 at the Aurora Cultural Centre. Volunteers from our guild and Welcoming Arms did a wonderful job with the many tasks relevant to our fundraiser. Particularly, I would like to thank the chefs, restaurants, caterers and bakers who donated and served their signature soups and bread to all who came for lunch or dinner, Meridian Credit Union for a very generous grant and Tuckers' Pottery Supplies for donating a portion of the clay that was used for bowl making. Thanks also to Roger Whitnall, Dave Parsons and Sam Carrothers for their contribution of great music and to the staff at the ACC, Meridian Credit Union and Reza, owner of Vic's Shoe Repair, for cheerfully selling the tickets. KwikKopy – Aurora and Dave Schembri Design donated our printed materials. And lastly, thank you to the members of Pine Tree Potters' Guild, who made and donated over 500 soup bowls from which our patrons ate then took home as a reminder that not everyone has a full bowl each day. Overall, the event was an overwhelming success, raising $16,000 to be shared by the York Region Food Network and Aurora's “Welcoming Arms” located on Metcalf Street. Pine Tree Potters' Guild has raised and donated $60,000 over the past four years and we are looking forward to the 2014 Empty Bowls Fundraiser.
