SENIOR SCAPE: Leafs LeaveBy Jim L. Abram What do you call a Toronto Maple Leaf with a Stanley Cup ring? Very old or a thief Well, I was really worried for a time. I thought the Leafs might win! The otherwise orderly universe would meet its end in tumultuous chaos! Seniors are the fortunate ones who can remember a time when the Leafs put a competitive team on the ice and won the Stanley Cup. That was over 45 years ago. Ma Bell sold us phones instead of hockey tickets. Fifty years ago, most television programming made its way to people's TV sets via rabbit ears until the late Ted Rogers took control of a media empire and revolutionized it. For this shortened season, the Toronto Maple Leafs are out of the playoffs. They lost in the seventh game in overtime. This makes me very sad because I know that the owners of the Leafs, Maple Leaf Sport and Entertainment, controlled by a Rogers/Bell holding company, will take it out on us in the form of more increases to phone and cable bills. Their shareholders won't stand for such a result and their customers must pay the price for their loss! Oh, did I forget to mention that I have a conspiracy theory about most everything? Cheer on your Aurora Tigers as they never seem to disappoint us! Let's move on. I shall rant no further, but I offer no promises. Aurora Seniors Centre Annual General Meeting The annual ASA general meeting is scheduled for June 5 at 4 p.m. The meeting will be followed by a barbecue for a small charge of $2 per person for all those that attend the meeting. All ASA members are encouraged to attend this very important meeting. This meeting allows an opportunity for all members in good standing to express their views and opinions on the future direction of the Aurora Seniors' Association. Your input is valued and encouraged as the constructive input provided by the membership is very helpful in guiding the mandate of the ASA Board of Directors entrusted by you. Budget Bistro This past Wednesday we were honoured to have joined us for lunch Councillor John Abel and Accessibility Advisory Committee vice-chair Tyler Barker who made a moving and enlightening presentation on behalf of the CCAM, Concerned Citizens for Accessibility and Mobility. Tyler recalled going to grade school with my daughter Nicole! I knew Nicole was unforgettable but he even remembered little old me! Mark your calendars to attend the Mobility Maze event to be held at the Aurora Community Centre on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 to learn more about accessibility challenges and opportunities in your Aurora. Fallsview Casino – Thursday, May 30 Get dealt into the action at Fallsview Casino Resort! Whether your game is slots or tables, you'll find it all on one of the largest Casino gaming floors in the world – an impressive 200,000 square feet – the equivalent of three football fields! Throughout, a welcome hint of sophistication and classic luxury awaits, blending seamlessly with the pulsing energy and adrenaline of gaming action! Enjoy a great day of gaming and slots during this 5 hour visit to Fallsview Casino which for only $20 ($25 for non ASA members) includes a $10 coin voucher. Niagara Falls is a wonderful place to visit in the Spring so come on out for a fun day with your friends from the Seniors Centre. Grand River Cruise – Tuesday, June 11 Begin your day in "The Landing" with complimentary coffee, muffin and shopping in the large Craft Shop. Enjoy an interesting audiovisual presentation about the Grand River followed by a fabulous live Music Show featuring “The Blazing Fiddles”. You will then embark on a 3 hour cruise featuring a sumptuous 3-course roast beef lunch served to your private window table. During your cruise your captain gives an informative narration about the Grand River and refreshments are served before returning to dock. Enjoy famous home-baked bread, apple pie, and other baked goods available to purchase after your cruise. Niagara Peach Festival – Saturday, August 10th This Peachy-keen tour begins at the Magnotta Winery where grapes from Magnotta's own vineyards are crushed and pressed. After the tour, you can head over to the complimentary tasting bar to sample a few of Magnotta's world class wines. Then off to the Peach Festival for fun, laughter and small town country fun. The day's activities include a fife and drum procession, live music and more. Antique steam tractors celebrate the history of farming, a classic car display, a sidewalk sale by local merchants, a peach pie baking contest and fresh steamed corn on the cob! Don't miss out on this great day trip! And finally …: The last time the Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup, most of their fans were in diapers. Coincidentally, the next time they win it, those same fans likely will be back in diapers, again!
