PC candidate criticized for missing debates

Newmarket-Aurora Liberal candidate Dr. Sylvain Roy has criticized Progressive Conservative candidate Dawn Gallagher Murphy for missing a series of debates hosted by the Aurora Chamber of Commerce and Aurora Public Library last week.

“I entered this race and looked forward to discussing the issues that matter to the people of Ontario and particularly the voters of Newmarket-Aurora,” said Roy in a statement on Monday. “Part of that discussion involves debating the other candidates in the race so that voters can get a better understanding of who we are, where we stand and how our policy proposals stack up.

“I hope [Gallagher Murphy] will reconsider her decision to pull out of the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce debate. It is unacceptable for her to take the voters of this riding for granted when there is no shortage of critical issues for which the people of Newmarket-Aurora deserve answers.”

Ms. Gallagher Murphy's campaign declined to comment on the statement at this time but reiterated she is focused on reaching as many voters as possible.

“Dawn is doing everything she can to knock on as many doors as possible and talk to as many voters as possible,” said campaign manager Ryan Puviraj.

The Newmarket Chamber of Commerce will host their meeting of Newmarket-Aurora candidates Thursday, May 19 at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre (505 Pickering Crescent). A meet and greet with candidates will take place from 6.30 – 7 p.m., with the debate starting at 7 p.m.

No registration is required for the in-person event and the debate can also be watched over Zoom. For more information on how to view, visit newmarketchamber.ca.
