Mosquito Jays take first tourney of the season

The Aurora Jays Minor Mosquito Rep. Baseball team travelled to London, ON this month for their first tournament of the season, hosted by the London Baseball Association.

After a slow start in their first game on the afternoon of Friday, June 9, and initially trailing 9-0 after two innings, the Jays defence and offence kicked in and they rallied, continuing to chip away at the lead, eventually earning a win against the Port Hope River Rats, 13-11.

Saturday morning was an early start and the Jays faced off against the West London Tipcaps at 8 a.m., coming away with an 11-4 victory and securing a berth in the overall tournament semi-final with two wins in the Divisional Round.

That afternoon, the Jays played the North Toronto Athletics. Although they had secured a spot in the semi-final, the Jays needed a win to lock up the #1 seed coming out of the Division.

After trailing 3-1 late in the game, the team dug down and came out with a 4-3 victory. The win earned the Jays the #1 seed from the Division with a 3-0 record and a berth in the semi-finals against the #2 seed from the other Division, the St. Thomas Cardinals, who had a record of two wins and one loss.

The semi-final was played on Sunday morning and the Jays emerged victorious with an 8 - 6 victory and a berth in the tournament championship game against the #1 seed from the other division – the Georgetown Eagles – who were also undefeated and had steamrolled through their previous games in the tournament by an overall margin of 93-21.

The championship game was played mostly in the pouring rain. After four lead changes throughout the game, the Jays ultimately prevailed and won the game 13-11 and were the tournament champions with a 5-0 record.

The win will make for an entertaining rivalry as the Jays travel to Georgetown to play in the Eagles' tournament on the weekend of July 4 with Georgetown returning to play in the Jays' tournament being held on the weekend of July 18 in Aurora.

Congratulations to team members Spencer Thomson, Matt Gianforcaro, Dylan Vasilevski, Jakob Israel, Griffin Kinahan, Sam White, Aidan Edmunds, Claire Johnson, Matt Keiser, Josh McLeod, Brayden Baird, Ethan Sanchez, Bensen Moore and coaches Tammy Hicks, Todd White and Gord Baird for a well played, well coached and well deserved championship.

The Jays play their home games on Tuesday nights at 6.30 at Town Park.
