| Guild anticipates sold out crowd for fourth Empty Bowls eventBy Brock Weir If you're looking for extra tickets for the popular Empty Bowls, an annual lunch and dinner event hosted by the Pine Tree Potters Guild, you're out of luck. Tickets for the dinner sitting at the December 5 event sold out within an hour and a half, with all proceeds going to Welcoming Arms and the York Region Food Network. Bringing together chefs from around Aurora and the surrounding communities, as well as bowls handcrafted by members of the guild, the idea is to feed the hungry and the homeless. “For years, Pine Tree used to give about 120 bowls to the Gardiner Museum in Toronto [for their event],” says Cathy Harris of the Guild. “We then did it for York Region. Our tickets sold out in an hour and a half. That is phenomenal and there are people still looking for tickets. People just want to give to the less fortunate.” As they prepare for the event, they are also putting the finishing touches on their annual show and sale, which will be run at the Aurora Cultural Centre in conjunction with their annual Fall Sale, which runs December 5 – 8 at the Church Street landmark. Approximately 50 Guild members have been working diligently preparing 450 bowls for the lunch and dinner, which will also be souvenirs for ticket holders. With 150 places at lunch and 168 at dinner, Ms. Harris says they welcome both a lot of new and familiar faces back each year. “Next year we're going to try to have a ‘Bowl-ympics' in the spring and summer with an assembly line and have a competition to see who can do the most bowls in an hour,” says Ms. Harris. “The prolific throwers can sit and throw at our 10 wheels in the studio, so we can produce, produce, produce!” For more information on Empty Bowls, the Fall Sale and other initiatives from the Guild, visit pinetreepotters.ca. |
