Family Leisure Complex – and Year of Sport – gets Federal seal of approval By Brock Weir The recently revamped Aurora Family Leisure Complex (AFLC) got the Federal seal of approval Monday afternoon hosting Bal Gosal, Minister of State for Sport, on his tour of Aurora. Accompanied by Newmarket-Aurora MP Lois Brown, he was greeted at the AFLC by Mayor Geoff Dawe and municipal staff, before embarking on a brief tour. They then visited the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame at Aurora Town Hall before heading downstairs for a community roundtable discussion on local sports and building healthier communities. On their tour of the AFLC, Mayor Dawe said the expansion, which was officially opened at the end of last month, is just one of the many initiatives that has Aurorans buzzing about sports and recreation in this, Aurora's Year of Sport. “There is little doubt the best way to keep our families healthy and make positive changes is to start with our youth,” said Mayor Dawe, highlighting not just the complex, but also the developing Parks and Recreation Master Plan, trails expansions, and new accessible playground equipment for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Park. “Adopting healthy lifestyles early paves the way for a lifetime of healthy choices. “The Year of Sport provides the perfect opportunity to get our residents involved, engaged and active in a variety of local sports and athletics, and a lifetime of good, healthy habits.” This was a sentiment echoed by Ms. Brown. “I know so many of you who have been actively engaged in the promotion of this,” she said of the Year of Sport. “It is going to be an exciting year. I think as we move towards wellness rather than illness, we will see greater enthusiasm in our constituency, greater enthusiasm and wellness in the people around us and greater benefits to our Town as a whole.” |
