Councillors need to protect heritage from “incompatible development”Thank you for all the support you have given our “olde” neighborhood regarding the designation of the southeast as a Heritage District. We regret that our Town Council has voted to end the study at this time. We are disappointed with their decision, especially since 49.9 per cent of homeowners remain undecided (indicating they were not for or against continuing the study) until they received additional information in order to make an informed decision. As part of the compromise agreement discussed in Council Chambers on April 23, we asked for a boundary review via the Heritage Advisory Committee earlier this month. Council did not discuss this option. We plan to hold the Mayor and Council members to the compromise agreement as we move forward. They need to show us how they will protect our heritage community from incompatible development. Our position remains the same, and this was the reason for initiating discussions of heritage designation several years ago: we welcome new development in the southeast district but it must be sympathetic to the heritage buildings that are already here. Thank you once again for your support and words of encouragement over the past three months. Erina Kelly, David Pressley, Anna Kroeplin, Dana Atkinson Town Park Area Residents - Committee Members |
