Aurora Barbarians Roll over London-St. George in first round Cup battle

By John Reich

After last week's heroics to save their 2014 season and preserve their position in Ontario's elite Marshall premiership, the Aurora Barbarians' senior men's team was not looking forward to the run down the 401 on Saturday to face next years' promotion team London-St. George in the first round of the McCormick Cup.

The London club posted an impressive 12-2 record in the B Division through the regular season and proved themselves worthy of promotion to the Marshall Championship for 2015.

The Barbarians would travel under-manned, minus six of the veteran players who had stepped up to confirm Aurora's place in the “A loop” last week in their win over Waterloo County.

But, the gap in the player depth of the clubs playing in the two tiers was clearly demonstrated as the York Region team dominated the home side from start to finish showing a flair that they will need to keep if they are to advance further in the competition.

The Barbarians scored seven trys on the day: two each from rookie D.J. Dillion, and Sean Sinel playing at outside centre with singles from Dr. G.W. Williams grad Matt Prevoe, Jesse Hayman and Danny Tupou. Sinel added five converts for a twenty point day. London St. George responded with two converted trys making the score 45 -14 at the final whistle.

After the game, assistant coach Bart Hennessey noted: “We made some mistakes but we were able to overcome them with strong defense and hard work. We will have a tougher time next week but if we can cut down on turnovers and move the ball like we did today we can be a factor in this cup competition."

The Barbarians play Toronto Scottish next Saturday at Fletcher's Fields in the Cup quarter final.

In G. Gage competition for development teams the Barbarians second squad lost in Oakville to the Crusaders 26 – 19 on Sunday. Scoring trys for Aurora were Leighton Chong, Sean Sinel and Brad Legere. Kicker James Hulbert added two conversions.
