Thousands brave ice for Easter Egg hunt

By Brock Weir

Saturday's annual Egg Hunt proved every icy Easter basket has a silver lining.

As the ice encasing Aurora melted following the storm earlier in the week, over 3,000 youngsters and family members descended on the Aurora Seniors' Centre and Town Hall for the annual tradition.

But, according to event organizer Shelley Ware, the team, which included the Easter Bunny, had to implement not Plan B, but Plan C, when it was clear the ice was going to pose some challenges.

“We are operating on Plan C right now, but are fortunate we only had to sacrifice one activity and it enabled us to use the space differently,” said Ms. Ware, surveying the crowd at the midday point. “Maybe next year we can increase [the space] now that we have used other areas we wouldn't have normally.”

With lands immediately behind the Seniors' Centre, typically the site of the eggstravaganza, an icy mess, the egg hunting action was moved north towards Town Hall and another leg of the Aurora Community Arboretum.

Welcome mats and carpets from Town Hall and the Seniors' Centre were drafted into action to line the pathway to give the kids something to walk on as they looked for eggs.

There may not have been anything for Town Hall employees to wipe their feet on when they came to work on Monday, but it was all for a good cause.
“We're fortunate it is working out and [I want to give] a huge kudos to the staff I get to work with for their heart and passion,” said Ms. Ware. “That is what makes contingency plans so smooth – or not smooth. The staff we have today are phenomenal.”
