Special Olympics Ontario gets big boost from YRP Memorial Tournament

By Jake Courtepatte

The Aurora Dunks' weekly Monday session was much more than just a practice last week.

Inspector Lou Malbeuf of York Regional Police dropped by to present the developmental basketball team with a giant cheque for $15,000, all monies going to Special Olympics Ontario.

Malbeuf is the chief organizer of the annual Rob Plunkett Memorial Softball Tournament, now in its eighth year. Since then, Malbeuf and his team have helped raised over $150,000 for Special Olympics, a cause championed by Const. Plunkett, who was killed in the line of duty.

According to Special Olympics Ontario-Aurora community coordinator Janet Mitchell, there are now 18 official sports servicing over 20,000 Special Olympics athletes across Ontario. Aurora has programs for basketball, swimming, golf, softball, bocce ball, rhythmic gymnastics, and martial gym.
