Fun Time Playing Texas Hold’em poker!
By Jim Abram

On Friday, June 12, the Aurora Seniors’ Centre hosted their first ever Texas BBQ and Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament. The evening of fun and competition started with a delicious BBQ dinner and assorted snacks. There was lots of good food and certainly no one went home hungry!
Texas hold ’em is a variation of the standard card game of poker. Two cards (hole cards) are dealt face down to each player and then five community cards are placed face-up by the dealer—a series of three (“the flop”) then an additional single card (“the turn”) and another additional card (“the river”).
The best five card poker hand is obtained by taking cards from either the community or their hole cards. Players have the option to check, bet, raise or fold after each deal; i.e., betting may occur prior to the flop, “on the flop”, “on the turn”, and “on the river”.
Then the best hand, or most strategic bluffer, wins the chips in the pot. At the end of the tournaments, the person with the most poker chips wins the coveted winner’s trophy. There is also a trophy awarded to the winner of the consolation table.
These trophies are then kept on prominent display in the Aurora Seniors’ Centre trophy case.
Our tournament winner is Frank Leone. Congratulations Frank! Frank went “all-in” holding the worst hand in poker: a 2 and a 7 before the “flop”.
Several competitors went all in as well so the competition was on. Frank lucked out when three spades came up on the flop filling out his flush, the winning hand making Frank our Texas Hold’em poker champion.
Norm McCully followed in second, then yours truly, Jim Abram was third and Iris Hazen fourth. Our consolation table winner was Iris Garel. Congratulations to all the winners. A fun time was had by all.
Also, a special thanks to Pat DeAngelis, Peter and Bonnie Maxwell and their team of volunteers for organizing and running such a tremendously successful and fun event.

A Special Thanks to Charles
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Charles Sequeira for his many years of contributing to the Seniorscape column during his 10+ years as President. Your writings will be missed but not forgotten. Charles, we all are hopeful that you consider writing as a guest writer whenever you get the urge!
Joining me in writing Seniorscape will be Sylvia Gilchrist and Marie Leone. Welcome aboard Sylvia and Marie. I know you will have as much fun writing for The Auroran, on behalf of seniors in Aurora as much as I do!
Jimmy’s last word: I just got my cheque for my share of the 35 million dollar Nortel class action law suit! $16.15. How will I spend all that money!
