Letters on LAV is debate Council declined to haveIt is interesting that citizens are continuing the debate on this matter, something that Council members declined to do. To put it in military terms, that was a dereliction of duty. As one Councillor told me it was difficult to vote in opposition and then risk the accusation of being anti-veteran. This type of unfair accusation was made by the Canada Company representative during his presentation to Council. Based on the published letters it is obvious that those in opposition believe in retaining the sanctity and unique beauty that citizens of Aurora, and King, and Whitchurch Townships brought to fruition in 1925. They had the vision and determination to accomplish something that would be difficult to accomplish today. One letter writer invoked the image of the National War Memorial which depicts a contingent of soldiers along with horses, struggling to haul a field gun in obviously difficult conditions. He equates having the gun there with placing a LAV at our Cenotaph. The real message for the Ottawa memorial is one of human struggle and determination and to honour that, not the weapon.
