Our plans are almost complete for the Aurora Community Earth Week Fair next Wednesday, April 20, at the Aurora Armoury.
The Environmental Advisory Committee’s organizing committee has been working hard to engage community groups, school ECO clubs, and sending out many emails to friends and families.
Town Staff have been a great help and are excited about the Fair as we are.
The Aurora Community Earth Week Fair will be a great chance for families to enjoy a nice spring evening in Aurora Town Park – with a wonderful selection of free crafts and games for the kids!
There will be something for everyone.
Children can try their hand at an interactive water activity that showcases the importance of conserving water, make fun crafts out of recycled materials, play active games like “Earth Week Hot Potato” and participate in a “recycling relay.”
Kids and parents can take a moment to design their own “Earth Week Pledge” and can even plant a seed at one of the potting stations.
A local Brownie group will be on hand to run activities like Nature Tic Tac Toe and Leaf races. There will even be coffee sponsored by Green River Coffee.
Coffee will be free for the first 200 people, but only if you bring your own reusable mug.
Cups will not be available.
Families can participate in the Earth Week Fair Passport activity and by visiting 12 or more fair booths, earn stamps towards the chance to win great prizes. There will be over 28 booths.
Booths will be inside the Armoury, children’s activities will be outside, weather permitting.
The Fair will provide our visitors with information with a little added fun. There will be lots to see and do for children and adults. The exhibitors will be ready to share their passion about the environment and energy requirements including: Environmental groups who are passionate about birds and their habitats in the urban area.
Other groups will discuss the protection of wetlands, wildlife habitat, forests and the need to increase the green coverage of York Region.
There will be groups who are passionate about protecting the trails and the associated land within the urban and greenbelt areas.
These groups also have a great interest in removing invasive plants and planting more indigenous flowers and bushes.
There will be groups who are passionate about gardening and will demonstrate how to prepare and plant gardens within the urban areas. They will teach our visitors about seeds and the correct way to plant. They will identify the types of plants that provide healthy food that grow well in our area.
There will be groups that will share their ideas of how to purchase healthy foods.
The Town of Aurora will provide information about the environmental and energy projects that have been completed and are in the planning process.
The Region of York will provide information about the many projects they have to offer.
The Scouts and Queen’s York Rangers will be there to discuss the many programs they have for our youth and how they provide training that will ensure a lifetime awareness of the environment.
The Schools’ ECO Club members will assist our committee in several areas of the organization during the Fair. They are eager to learn and become a partner with the EAC to provide assistance to develop their individual clubs.
The energy groups will discuss the benefits of solar panels, LED lighting, high efficiency furnaces and air conditioning. They will discuss the solar panel projects and street LED lighting projects completed in Aurora and will discuss the many ways to reduce the energy consumption in homes.
We want the event to provide information with an element of fun. We want to inspire adults and our youth to help us all protect our environment and be responsible users of the energy that provides us with the many comforts we enjoy.
