Community vigil planned Saturday following Quebec attack

By Brock Weir

Aurora's faith communities will hold a Community Vigil on Saturday afternoon to stand in solidarity with the local Muslim community, following a terrorist attack on a Quebec City mosque over the weekend.

The shooting, carried out during evening prayers at Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec on Sunday, left six dead and 19 wounded, leading faith communities across the country to stand up in solidarity with their Muslim brothers and sisters.

The community vigil, hosted by Aurora United Church, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and Trinity Anglican Church, with participation from an Aurora Imam and the Newmarket Islamic Centre, will take place at the Aurora Cultural Centre on February 4, from 1.30 – 3 p.m.

Other faith communities were expected to confirm their participation in Saturday's vigil as The Auroran went to press.

The Newmarket Islamic Centre, which serves the communities of both Newmarket and Aurora, are also planning a vigil Friday night at Riverwalk Commons, starting at 6.30 p.m.
