Aurora Tigers peewees put on scoring clinic at Toronto tournament

By Jake Courtepatte

With a series against the rival Newmarket Redmen looming, the Minor Peewee A Tigers picked up an extra boost of confidence at just the right time.

They came away the champions at the Toronto Aeros' annual “Winter Challenge” tournament, held last weekend.

A 2 – 2 tie with the Fox Valley Cyclones of Chicago would prove to be the only falter in the Tigers' system, handily shutting out the Toronto Shamrocks 3 – 0 later the same afternoon.

An 8 – 1 win over the Sudbury Wolves and a 6 – 0 shutout of the Don Mills Mustangs followed, leaving Aurora as the top seed out of round robin play.

A more confident Tigers squad entered the semifinal rematch with the Cyclones, earning a 5 – 1 victory early Sunday morning to send Aurora to the championship game.

There they met the West Hill Golden Hawks, winning 3 – 1 for their first tournament title in four tries this season.

The win came as a fitting closure for a season-opening wound, when Aurora lost 3 – 2 in a tournament championship in Toronto early in the season.

Six games over three days put a toll on the Tigers' roster, never playing with a full bench. Despite this fact, the position juggling seemed to work as Aurora put up 25 goals-for in the tournament, surrendering only four against.

With one of their preseason goals now under their belt, the Tigers have turned to the York Region playoffs in a five-game series with the Redmen. Aurora took an early lead with a 5 – 2 win in Game 1 earlier this week.

The next game is Friday at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex. Puck drop is set for 7:45p.m.

The Tigers finished the regular season with an impressive 31-9-9 record in early January.
