Aurora native suffers injury, out of Olympics

Aurora native Derek Livingston took to Instagram on Monday to announce he has withdrawn from the 2022 Beijing Olympics after suffering a lower-body injury in practice.

β€œIt is with a heavy heart that I announce I will not be competing at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing,” Livingston wrote.

β€œA few days ago, I had an accident during training in Calgary that left me with a break in my fibula. As this wasn't the easiest news to receive, I have taken some time to process everything and I am back home in Whistler with my wife and dog, resting and recovering.”

In what would have been Livingston's third Olympic appearance in his career, the half-pipe snowboarder thanked all doctors working with Canada Snowboard, his family and his team. He will be cheering on everyone from home.

Canada Snowboard later announced, Calgary, AB native Liam Gill will be Livingston's replacement. The 18-year-old will join Canada Snowboard team as the only indigenous athlete, on behalf of Liidlii Kue First Nation.

Canada Snowboard team will be sending 23 athletes to represent the nation. All 12 female athletes on the roster, will be the most Canada has ever sent to an Olympics.
