Youth displayed good sportsmanship in chess tourney

March 4, 2015   ·   0 Comments

The Optimist Club of Aurora recently held its 19th Annual Chess Tournament at the Aurora Legion with 10 schools represented!
One hundred and fifty children, from Grades 1 to 8, vied against each other, with the top three players from each grade receiving a trophy and an invitation to the Optimist Regionals competition being held this month.
The determination and strategy demonstrated by the youth to win a game was outstanding!
The sportsmanship was exceptional as after a game a friendly handshake was offered to the opponents.
Now THAT’s awesome!
I would like to thank the following people for making this day such a great event for all: the volunteer judges, the teachers, parents and Optimist Club members who assisted the children in fair play.
Thank you to the committee for organizing such a well-run event, the Mayor for welcoming our youth, the Legion for hosting this event and the Legion ladies who offered a hot lunch to everyone who attended!
I really would like to thank the students who made this a wonderful day by demonstrating good sportsmanship, respect and sheer fun in this competition.
Thank you to all the schools that organize Chess Clubs to teach their students these important attributes – while enhancing their math skills!

President, Optimist Club of Aurora
