Committee member “disappointed” over Gallo’s comments

October 22, 2014   ·   0 Comments

During the Sport Aurora All Candidates debate last week, Mr. Gallo made disparaging remarks in regards to the Mayor’s Golf Tournament committee.
These remarks simply cannot go unchallenged.
This committee has been together for 17 years, through 14 tournaments, through which over $500,000 has been returned to local non-profit groups serving our community. This year, we were proud to donate $67,000 to 14 charities and community groups.
Our committee has always been aware of the possibility of being identified for political purposes and this is the main reason we chose to operate independently, outside of the Town Hall. Our committee is comprised of individuals who are all volunteers. It is unfortunate that we had to go to this extent, but we did not want to compromise those that wished to volunteer their time through their commitment to this event and consequently the charities we support.
I know I speak for every member of our committee, many of whom have served from the first tournament 17 years ago, when I say how proud we are of the funds we have raised, of the charities and non-profits we have assisted and of our collective integrity of running this event independently and outside of the confines of the Town.
I speak on behalf of every member of our committee when I say how disappointed we are that our collective efforts are being negatively construed by Mr. Gallo for his political gain.
This type of behaviour does nothing but hurt the community groups for which we are so proud to support.

Don Harrison
Committee Member
