Municipal election is a free-for-all

October 8, 2014   ·   0 Comments

The 2014 Municipal election is truly a free-for-all. With the number of people running for Council, how do residents choose?
Although the ballot says that you can vote for UP TO eight councillors, you do not have to. You can vote for as few as one and can vote for up to eight.
I humbly ask that you do your homework before you vote. If they are existing councillors, what kind of a job have they done over the past four years? Did they ask you what you thought? Did they add anything to Council meetings? Were they there only for photo ops? What was their attendance like? Did they only align themselves with the Mayor on every vote, or did they vote for you, the residents.
For new candidates, please find out how long have they lived in Aurora. If they have only been here for less than a year, how much do they really know about Aurora? Do they know the history of this great town? Are they aligning themselves with one of the candidates for Mayor, or are they working for the best of Aurora?
Aurora requires positive thinkers and leaders and not followers? What do the candidates think of the current overspending of the past Council? Are they the type of people who care about the environment? Do they know what the Oak Ridges Moraine means to our Town? What do they think of the 2C lands development? How do they plan to get business back to Aurora? Do they want to help our valuable seniors? Do they believe in affordable housing? These are only a few questions that I will ask each candidate and I sure that you will have your own.
The point is that you really should know what these people stand for.
Last point, are any of the candidates in trouble with the law as there are not any tests before they sign up?
Now is the time to check out the 28 candidates for Council. As for the two mayor candidates, ask them what their vision is for the future of Aurora. Has either of the two candidates made promises in the last election and NOT followed through on them? One of them who ran last time promised to get “Council’s hands out of residents’ pockets”, yet still proceeded to have your taxes raised each of the past four years. Please do not get fooled again.
Just my opinion.
