Canada Day Parade should be more selective, says reader

July 9, 2014   ·   0 Comments

Last Tuesday, I attended the Aurora Canada Day Parade. I was impressed that with the uncertain weather large crowds had lined up on both sides of Yonge Street to watch the parade.
Canada Day is a national event and a national celebration.
It is expected that military units, police forces and fire and ambulance units to take part in it; also, national organisations such as the Shriners, Lions Club, Rotary Club, etc., can participate.
However, I consider it unacceptable that private companies with their “floats” are advertising their products on such an occasion.
Canada Day is our equivalence to Bastille Day in France, July 4th in the United States, and only expressions of national service should reflect those ideals.
