Impaired driver arrested after falling asleep in drive-thru

By Brock Weir

A driver was charged with impaired driving after falling asleep in the middle of a Wellington Street East drive-thru on Sunday afternoon.
The incident took place at the Tim Hortons-Wendy's outlet at the corner of Wellington and John West Way.
The driver blew more than four times the legal limit after York Regional Police officers had to smash through the window of the vehicle in order to wake up the driver.
“On Sunday, shortly before 5 p.m., officers were called to the drive-thru of a restaurant located at 304 Wellington Street East for a report of a driver asleep at the wheel,” said YRP Constable Andy Pattenden in a statement. “When officers arrived, they found the vehicle pulled up to the window. The vehicle was running and the driver was asleep. After knocking repeatedly on the window to awake the driver, officers smashed the passenger window to gain access to the car. Officers woke the driver, who smelled of alcohol. He was placed under arrest and transported to #1 District for a breath test where he blew more than four times the legal limit.”
The driver in question was one of 21 impaired drivers removed from York Region roads over the past week, one of whom was an Aurora resident.
York Regional Police has laid more than 100 impaired-related criminal charges so far this year.
