Eligible voters put their weight behind Tom Mrakas as Aurora’s next mayor – as did the voters of tomorrow.
Mr. Mrakas handily won five student polls carried out in Aurora through CIVIX’s Student Vote program, which provides schools the resources they need to educate students on Federal, Provincial, and Municipal elections, as well as the resources to engage future leaders through in-school polls so they can have their say.
Over 150,000 students from across Ontario participated in the Student Vote program and, here in Aurora, five schools participated: Lester B. Pearson Public School, Northern Lights Public School, Rick Hansen Public School, Holy Spirit Catholic Elementary School, and Academie de la Moraine.
Aurora-wide, Mayor-elect Mrakas picked up 146 student votes.
Geoff Dawe placed second with 65 votes, while John Abel was close behind with 62 votes, with fourth place going to Chris Ballard with 37 votes.
45 votes were cast at Academie de la Moraine, 20 of which went to Mr. Mrakas, 15 to Mr. Abel, seven to Mr. Ballard, and three to Mr. Dawe.
Holy Spirit collected 173 votes, with Mr. Mrakas coming out on top with 72, Mr. Abel with 41, Mr. Dawe with 39, and Mr. Ballard with 21.
92 students sounded off at Lester B. Pearson, with Mr. Mrakas taking home 54, Mr. Dawe 23, Mr. Ballard nine and Mr. Abel six.
Results from Northern Lights and Rick Hansen were not registered.
