The Aurora Jays’ struggles at the plate continued over the weekend in the North Dufferin Baseball League, scoring only a trio of runs while falling short against the Lisle Astros.
The similarly-matched squads met up for the first time this season on Sunday night, the Jays visiting the Astros at Ross Houston Memorial Park.
Fresh off an eight-run scoring effort in their third win of the season, the Jays seemed to be finding their groove again at the plate when they plated both Stephan Vallee and Aaron Giroux in the first inning.
Devon Wu, the Jays go-to ace in the 2018 season, kept the Astros off the board until the third inning, when a home run brought in two runs to tie the game.
The home team took the lead in the fifth after knocking in a run with a double, though Aurora crawled back to tie it in the top of the seventh inning with a double of their own.
Veteran Brad Crosby came in in relief of Wu in the bottom of the final inning, where a walk-off homerun sealed the 4 – 3 victory for Lisle.
Wu gave up eleven hits over his six innings of work, allowing three runs while striking out three batters.
Experiencing an up-and-down start to the season chock full of postponements, the Jays are nearing the bottom of the AA league’s standings, holding onto a record of 3-5-2 through the first six weeks of the season.
They currently sit eleventh in the fourteen-team league with eight points, well back of the Ivy Leafs, who are setting the pace with a 12-1-0 start.
A pair of crucial matchups lies ahead for the Jays this week, looking to play catchup with the Midland Mariners and Barrie Angels, trailing the teams by four and two points respectively.
Thursday’s road test at Tiffin Park in Midland is set for first pitch at 7:30p.m., before the Jays travel to Barrie on Friday.
