SAC grad Foegele shines in AHL All-Star game

By Jake Courtepatte

A familiar face around the St. Andrew's campus could be seen on national television Sunday night in an All-Star uniform.
It may not have been an NHL sweater, with the world's premier league's All-Star game going earlier in the afternoon, but Warren Foegele has been impressive enough in his first year with the Charlotte Checkers to earn an American Hockey League All-Star nod.
Born in Markham, Foegele cut his teeth with both the Toronto Nationals and Markham Waxers AAA programs before taking on a varsity role at St. Andrew's College in Aurora, where he had attended since Grade Six.
Suiting up for a slew of games for the Varsity Saints squad as just a sophomore, he led the junior varsity Saints in scoring in 2011-12, before joining the varsity squad in a full-time capacity the following season.
He once again led his team in scoring at over a point-per- game pace, with his scoring prowess and leadership skills combining to warrant an ‘A' on his chest in his senior season.
Leading the Saints to a CISAA title, Foegele put up an outstanding 87 points in 44 games to attract the attention of some of the American college hockey's top programs.
Foegele credits Saints coach David Manning for helping him flourish into a top-level player.
Originally slated to play junior hockey in the BCHL the following season, he instead chose to graduate and accept a scholarship to the University of New Hampshire, around the same time he was ranked the 66th skater for the upcoming 2014 NHL Draft. That June, the Hurricanes would take him 67th.
Three years later, the six-foot-two, 200-lb. left winger is turning heads in his first professional league season, notching twenty goals and twelve assists through only the first 42 games.
Sunday's All-Star game, in Utica, New York, saw Foegele suit up for Team Atlantic, leading his team with four assists through the one-day tournament.
He also finished second in the fastest skater competition.
At his current pace, Foegele could see NHL action as early as next season, having the size and experience as a 21-year old.
“Warren impressed in rookie camp,” said General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, the Checkers' parent club, Ron Francis upon Foegele's All-Star selection. “He deserves the recognition and he's going to be a big part of our club.”
