St. Max Mustangs bow to powerhouse Warriors

By Jake Courtepatte

The Huron Heights Warriors of Newmarket are truly in a league of their own.
The varsity football squad once again proved on Friday that they are light years above the competition in the York Region Athletic Association, taking down the rival St. Maximilian Kolbe Mustangs of Aurora in a 49 – 0 drubbing.
In their first and only meeting of the season, the 2016 YRAA finalists clashed on St. Max's field in the final game of the regular season.
A quiet first quarter had the Warriors up by a major at the buzzer, before they took a 21 – 0 lead into halftime with a pair of touchdowns in the second.
The win ensured a fourth-place ranking for the Warriors in Ontario, and ninth Canada-wide.
The young Mustangs, meanwhile, experienced their second loss in a row in what is a turnaround year for the team, after losing several key veterans to graduation at the end of last season.
St. Max finishes the season with a record of 2-2-1, good for third place in the six-team league.
They were leapfrogged Friday by the King City Lions, who in their second full year in the YRAA's top conference capped off a 4-1-0 season with a 36 – 0 shutout of St. Brother Andre.
Huron Heights finished the season at a perfect 5-0-0 to no one's surprise, putting up an astonishing 46.4 points per game while allowing only 21 all season.
Playoff seeding will begin next week.
