Mustangs shut out Marauders in YRAA football opener

By Jake Courtepatte

It may only be the first week of the season, but another YRAA championship showdown between the St. Maximilian Kolbe Mustangs and the Huron Heights Warriors seems almost inevitable.

Despite a massive roster turnover thanks to a large graduating class in 2017, the Mustangs were able to roll over the Markham Marauders 23 – 0 in their season opener on Thursday.

With possession rarely leaving the Markham backfield, Jordan Torres, Nolan Lovegrove, and Michael Bazzo all found the endzone for the Mustangs.

Head coach Joe Gaudio leads an inexperienced squad into the fall season, now leaning on Grade 10 student Lukus Dold in the quarterback position after longtime vet Ben Langlois left for Queen's University.

The Warriors, meanwhile, shut out the Bill Crothers Colts in their opening week matchup, going to the air for a touchdown on their opening drive en route to a 36 – 0 drubbing.

Undefeated in two seasons of YRAA football, the Warriors have taken down the Mustangs in the past two championship bowl games.

This year's final is set for November 18, with the top two teams through the short regular season meeting after the elimination of the semifinal games from the schedule.

The Mustangs take on St. Brother Andre in week two action on Friday, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. at the St. Max field.
