A gaping hole in the Aurora FC women’s roster left the semi-pro soccer team with a 3 – 1 loss to Durham at the Pickering Soccer Complex on Saturday.
With the absence of team-leading scorer Sarah Stratigakis, Aurora was blanked in the first half while allowing a goal just before the whistle to head to break down 1 – 0.
Two more Durham goals at the 49 and 62-minute marks dug the hole deeper for the visiting squad, who managed to get on the board in the 74th-minute thanks to Markela Beljeri’s first of the season.
The loss was the second in a row for the young Aurora squad, who strung together three wins throughout the month of June in three straight clean sheets.
Holding steady in the standings at eighth place with a record of 3-5-0, Aurora will look to climb the ladder when they host the last place Sanjaxx Lions at Highland Park in Aurora on Saturday.
Game time is set for 4 p.m.
The men’s side, whose Friday night matchup with ProStars FC of Brampton was postponed, return to action immediately following the women’s match in a tough meeting with the 8-0-2 Sigma FC.
Holding a record of 1-7-1 good for seventh place in the eight-team East division, the men have been left with a clean sheet in their last two matches.
